Dr. Mintz is a tenured professor at the University of Florida, where she teaches the Psychology of Human Sexuality to hundreds of undergraduate students each year. She has published over 50 research articles in academic journals and six chapters in academic books. Dr.Mintz has also received numerous professional and teaching awards. Her Fellow Status in the American Psychological Association indicates that her work has had a positive national influence on the field of psychology.
Dr. Laurie is a feminist author who aims to empower women sexually through informative books. She has written the best-sellers: Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters and How to Get It (HarperOne, 2017) and A Tired Woman’s Guide to Passionate Sex: Reclaim Your Desire Reignite Your Relationship (Adams Media, 2009).
With this goal of providing scientifically-accurate, sex-positive information to enhance female pleasure and thwart misogyny, Dr. Mintz also writes a popular Psychology Today blog. As a seasoned sex therapist, she provides training to other psychologists and professionals through workshops. Before pursuing her passion for spreading science-based sex-positive knowledge to laypersons, she has worked diligently as a psychologist, helping clients deal with psychological issues.
“ In the last ten years or so, I’ve expanded to other activities (speaking, writing, consulting) because I wanted to reach a more general audience than just the students at UF and the readers of scientific journals. With so many critics with no credentials, Laurie faced a backlash from people who were not interested in erasing misogyny or engaging in the much-needed, sex-positive talk. After one particular hater told her during an Instagram Live that she was “a washed-up old lady who probably hadn’t had sex in years,” she retorted back that she’d probably been having good sex and orgasms longer than he’d been alive. This interaction also led her to embrace her wrinkles and sexual expertise simultaneously, coining the title for herself ‘Sex Granny.’
